A record nine Major League Baseball teams paid the Competitive Balance Tax for 2024, totaling $311 million. The CBT threshold was $237 million, based on the total for 40-man roster salaries and benefits. The Dodgers paid the most at $103 million and the Cubs paid the least at $570,309. The other seven teams, in order were the Mets, Yankees, Phillies, Braves, Rangers, Astros, and Giants.
The Dodgers, Mets, Yankees and Phillies were taxed at 50 percent because they've been over the CBT threshold for three consecutive years. Additionally, the Dodgers, Mets and Yankees were taxed an additional 60 percent (110-percent total) because they were each $60 million over the threshold. After the taxes go to league programs, $155.5 million will be distributed among the revenue-sharing teams.
Our José Negron reported today that the Pirates were 26th in final payroll at $122,942,572, That was higher than four teams, meaning the Dodgers paid in CBT about what five teams spent total in 2024.
Nothing to see here. Everything's fine.
