Two days after Jim Rutherford said Canucks forward J.T. Miller or Elias Pettersson would have to be moved from the roster because of an ongoing rift, Miller was dealt Friday to the Rangers for forward Filip Chytil, defenseman Victor Mancini and a 2025 first-round draft pick. The Rangers also received defenseman Erik Brannstrom and minor-league forward Jackson Derrington.
Miller, 31, had to waive his no movement clause, but did so to return to the Rangers, who drafted him 15th overall in 2011 and with whom he built his reputation as 20-goal scorer and effective playmaker over parts of six seasons before he was traded to the Lightning in a deadline deal. Miller had spent the last six seasons in Vancouver, posting 152 goals and 285 assists in 404 games played.
The Rangers took Chytil 21st-overall in 2017, and had played all eight NHL seasons with New York. In 378 games, he scored 75 goals and registered 89 assists as a third-line center. Mancini is a rookie with 15 games of experience, scoring 1 goal and 4 assists.
Chytil is who he is, a reliable third-liner and penalty killer, but he's no replacement for Miller. Mancini might be the real get in exchange, with good size and good offensive instincts. Rutherford did well to get a decent player return and a first-rounder this year, while other teams knew he was in a pinch with Miller and Pettersson, Good move by the Rangers, too. Brannstrom's a solid defenseman. Win-win.
