The Commanders signed free-agent kicker Matt Gay to a record contract. Though it's just a one-year deal, it is fully guaranteed at $4.25 million, the largest guarantee ever for a kicker.
It is an interesting choice. Gay was released by the Colts last month, after consecutive years making 80.5 and 83.8 percent of his kicks, respectively. Gay was money inside 50 yards, making 53 of 56 kicks of that length over those two seasons with Indianapolis. But Gay is just 11 of 22 from beyond 50 yards.
It's also worth noting that Gay has kicked indoors at his home stadium for five of his six-year career. The exception? His rookie year with Tampa Bay, when he had a career-worst 77.1 make percentage in 2019.
Do the Commanders believe that a Jayden Daniels-led offense won't have many 50+ yard opportunities? If not, this is a big risk. Have to pay the guy whether he's good or not.
