Good morning from the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex where the Penguins will hold what is presumed to be an optional skate beginning at 10:30 a.m. Less than 24 hours after trading MarcusPettersson and DrewO'Connor to the Canucks for three players and a first-round draft pick, KyleDubas is scheduled to speak here around that time, too, so I'll have updates throughout the morning.

• Sullivan said Malkin skating this morning is a sign that he's taking the next step in his recovery from his knee injury.
• In regards to tonight's game, MikeSullivan said AlexNedeljkovic will start against the Predators.
• P.O. Joseph on the departures of Pettersson and O’Connor: “It definitely sucks. You lose some friends and people you’ve been together with for so long. I remember coming in, looking at Petey, same kind of body frame, and how much of a warrior he is and how good of a person he is. I had the chance to play with OC in Wilkes and we’ve been together for five years or so. It’s never easy to lose guys like that, but I just wish them the best.”
• Strange seeing the locker in between Cody Glass and Sidney Crosby with no name plate. Previously occupied by O’Connor. Pettersson’s is relatively empty in between Kris Letang and Erik Karlsson.
• Evgeni Malkin is out on the ice in a white jersey.
• Desharnais in particular brings value defensively and on the penalty kill. Dubas said the club is hoping he can help fill the void left by Pettersson on the PK.
• Dubas said Pettersson and his representation made it clear that he liked it in Pittsburgh and wanted to talk about an extension. It was the team's decision not to have those discussions. Dubas said they felt the best thing for them was to "protect our options" and not go down that path without seeing how the season progressed.
• Dubas said he expects DantonHeinen and VincentDesharnais to land in Pittsburgh later this morning. The club is working to make them options against the Predators tonight.
