The Penguins will celebrate their annual Pride Game on Tuesday against the Ducks, providing the opportunity for fans to connect with local organizations tied to the LGBTQ+ community, as well as raising money to support local LGBTQ+ organizations.
No players are required to do anything to participate in the Pride Games. The NHL has banned the use of specialty warmup jerseys for any kind of themed nights, and players can't be forced to participate in any promotional content the team does or use things like the rainbow-colored Pride Tape in warmups.
Some players do those extra shows of support anyway. Bryan Rust has always been someone to use the Pride Tape, and still believes it's an important thing to do.
"For me, it's just about making a statement that everyone is welcome," Rust told me. "Nobody is being left out. We're all in this together, if you're a hockey fan, hockey player, hockey coach. It doesn't matter who you are, what you do, what you believe. Everybody is welcome in the community."
