For this Survey Says, I wanted to know what some of the Penguins players special or niche interests were so I asked them -- What is one topic you know more about than anyone else in this room?
Other than the rookies claiming to be the preeminent expert on soccer, just about everyone actually had unique answers. Here's how the Penguins' players (and some now former players) answered the question.
Bryan Rust: “I’d say … how to change a diaper.”
Ryan Graves: “I’d love to say the Maritimes, but I think Sid knows about that. I watch a lot of golf, I know a lot of golfers and things like that. But actually, I bet I read more books than most people in this room. I have a better book repertoire than most guys in the room. I like books that are based on a true story but dramatized. I really liked 'American Kingpin,' 'Red Notice,' 'From the Ashes,' books like that.”
Connor Dewar: “Sharks.”
Phil Tomasino: “I’m half Italian, so I would say Italian culture. But like, Acciari is full-blown Italian. So maybe I’ll say Italian culture, but Cookie might have something to say about that.”
Noel Acciari: “Probably movies.”
Kris Letang: “F1.”
Brett Kulak: “Maybe fishing, I know a little bit about fishing.”
Parker Wotherspoon: “Geez, I feel like my interests are pretty common. Golf maybe? I know some war stuff, some ancient stuff, but I wouldn’t be an expert on that. I’d say golf, but I’d think Brazeau probably knows more. Cooking, actually. I feel like there’s not a lot of cookers.”
Justin Brazeau: “I’m going to go with video games.”
Connor Clifton: “Mechanical engineering. That’s my degree. Four years of study, you know? I know a little, but I don’t know a lot. But I know enough to know more than everybody in this room.”
Ville Koivunen: “Soccer!”
Harrison Brunicke: “Oh my gosh. I know quite a bit about soccer, that’s one.”
Ben Kindel: “I don’t really have any special interests, but maybe things about soccer that nobody would really know about in the hockey world.”
Jack St. Ivany: “I would say cooking. I mean, I should know politics, I was a poli sci major. But I’m not talking about that with anybody in here, we’ve got too many opinions. So. I would say cooking.”
Sidney Crosby: “World War II history.”
Rutger McGroarty: “French fries. I grew up eating a lot of french fries, and so I could tell you my opinion for fast food french fries, which is the best. The best is Runza, it’s really small, just based out of like Nebraska and Iowa. That’s the best. Raising Canes is second.”
Tommy Novak: “Probably Pokemon.”
Erik Karlsson: “Geography.”
Blake Lizotte: “Probably tennis. I’m a bit of a tennis nerd. Although, Hayes’ wife played at a high level, so he might know a lot too.”
Sam Poulin: “I’d say EDM music, or house music.”
Kevin Hayes: “Football.”
Ryan Shea: “Football, but I bet you Rusty said that. Or Hayesy.”
Danton Heinen: (To Hayes) What do I know the most about? (Hayes: What do you and your dad chat about?) Oh, greenhouses. Yeah, I’d say greenhouses.”
Anthony Mantha: “UFC, I follow it quite a bit.”
Matt Dumba: “Cowtown (Calgary). Or dogs. Dogs for sure. I can chop it up about dogs. When you have four dogs, you learn a lot.”
Joona Koppanen: “Finnish culture, saunas. (Me: More than Ville?) I’m older, I have more knowledge.”
Arturs Silovs: “I would say I’m pretty confident in knowledge of flags. I’m pretty good at it. I don’t know if other guys know flags, but I’m really good.”
Sergei Murashov: “Philosophy.”
Tristan Jarry: “Trucks.”
Rickard Rakell: “Right now, I’d think UFOs. (Me: What do you know about UFOs?) I watched a documentary. I mean, they’re out there.”
