Kyle Dubas on Monday set the expectations for what kinds of signings could be expected from the Penguins on Tuesday -- two- or three-year contracts of players younger than 30, who can serve as competition for the young players but won't block them from a spot if they earn it.
They got that in left-handed defenseman Parker Wotherspoon, signed to a two-year contract with a $1 million average annual value.
Wotherspoon, 27, has played eight full professional seasons and all but 108 games have come at the AHL level. Last season was his first year that he was exclusively in the NHL, and he skated in 55 games with the Bruins, recording one goal, six assists and a minus-10 rating.
Wotherspoon is right in line with the Penguins' goals for this free agency. He's capable of playing NHL games, and could step into the left side of the Penguins' blue line. He ensures that a spot won't just be left open and handed to Owen Pickering by default. But also, if Pickering does legitimately earn a spot, Wotherspoon's contract is entirely able to be buried in the minors.
