The Penguins capped off a trio of free agent signings on Tuesday with the signing of left-handed defenseman Caleb Jones to a two-year contract that carries a $900,000 cap hit.
Jones, 28, spent the majority of last season in the AHL with the Kings' Ontario Reign, where he scored two goals and 19 assists and was a plus-6 in 44 games. He was scoreless and a minus-1 in six NHL games.
Jones' eight-year professional career has been split between the NHL and AHL, appearing in 248 NHL games and 181 AHL games.
Jones, like Caleb Wotherspoon and Justin Brazeau, is exactly what Dubas said on Monday they'd be going after: Players who are under 30, on two- or three-year deals, who can serve as competition for their young players but not block those young players if they earn a spot. His $900,000 cap hit is entirely able to be buried in the minors if he doesn't earn a spot over someone like Owen Pickering.
