• Ballgame.
• Sid misses the empty net. Another draw deep. 6.3 left.
• Heavy New York pressure. Puck goes into the netting. Faceoff deep. 21 seconds left.
• Rust just misses the vacated side of the net. Hogberg might've gotten a piece of that with the shaft. 2:13 left
• Oh, my. Islanders really coming now.
• GOAL: Patrick Roy pulls Hogberg, and the Islanders score with the extra man on a friendly carom of their own. Lee again. Horvat's shot went in off his teammate. Time: 16:10, third period. Other assist: Ryan Pulock. Penguins, 3-2
• GOAL: New York finally beats Ned, and Lee finally gets the goal I've expected from him all evening. Tremendous redirect from just above the point. Guy's so good. Time: 12:59, third period. Assist: Romanov. Penguins, 3-1
• GOAL: Tomasino accidentally caroms one in off Alexander Romanov on the power play. Everyone was laughing right away. Assists: Glass, O'Connor. Time: 6:57, third period. Penguins, 3-0
• MacLean's off for cross-checking Tomasino. PP1 time.
• Good chance for DOC. You know how that turned out. He'll get there.
• Third period underway. Sid's line starts.
• Teams back onto the ice. No surprises on either side.
• End second period. Shots are 27-21 after the late New York surge on the power play.
• Now Ned doesn't give up a rebound with Lee waiting for one. No excuses. Just saves. (That said, the PK's looked a lot better than it just did on that kill.)
• Now another save on Barzal.
• OUTRAGEOUS SAVE by Ned now on MacLean, dipping into the low slow. That's how it's done. No wondering/worrying about whose fault it would've been. Just stop the damned puck.
• Big save by Ned on a Simon Holmstrom one-timer. Rebound skips wide.
• Clurman's maiden voyage to an NHL penalty box sees him off for hooking Nelson. Huge kill with 2:43 left in the period.
• Another really good shift for the Glass line.
• Kyle MacLean does well to squirt by Graves along the left boards for a good chance, but Ned stops the stuff attempt at the far post.
• Quality work by the fourth line. The Penguins are outshooting the Islanders, 23-11, with six minutes left in the second period. Playing really well.
• Couple of big chances for Bo Horvat between the hashes. Ned goes rogue and makes saves.
• New York power play. Rakell's off for a hook on Barzal. Big kill coming.
• Know what'd be really crazy? If the Islanders didn't score a goal right after the Penguins scored one.
• Rust bursts free for a clean breakaway, tries a backhand tuck on the five-hole, and Hogberg erratically closes it off.
• Massive crowd today, by the way. Has to be overflow.
• Ned makes saves on shots that get redirected, then makes saves on players right in front of the blue paint. Wild.
• Awesome moment in here just now. The linesman was about to drop the puck for the ensuing faceoff, and the crowd wouldn't let him because of a sudden standing ovation for Sid. Blake Lizotte stepped out, Sid stood and the roar was deafening.
• GOAL: Bunting. Dude. What a finish. And that's Sid's 1,034th assist for real this time, passing Mario Lemieux. Other assist: Phil Tomasino. Time: 1:36, second period. Penguins, 2-0
• DOC on PP2, which is quite the show of faith unto itself, making much mayhem around the New York crease, but no goals.
• Noah Dobson's off for tripping Sid. Here's PP2.
• Second period underway.
• End first period. Shots were six each, and shot attempts were 17 each, although the Islanders had a 5-2 edge in high-danger scoring chances. The Penguins didn't give up an early goal. Crazy how that can have an impact on the evening as a whole.
• Mat Barzal with a dangerous redirect right in front. Palmieri takes a couple extra cracks on Ned, and Rust lets him know that's unappreciated. That's how it's done.
• Evgeni Malkin's come to play. Dancing.
• Drew O'Connor with a point-blank backhander that's awkwardly fended off by Hogberg. DOC will never score again.
• If the Islanders aren't at their best, it's not because they aren't being led by their captain. Anders Lee's been tremendous the whole period. A goal waiting to happen.
• Easy to see how shaky Hogberg is. Couldn't plant left skate on that routine, long-range wrister from Cody Glass. Need to shoot on this dude.
• One shot for the Islanders halfway through the first. Let's call that the Nate Clurman effect.
• Just a solid overall posture for the club. Forward lean. Aggressive.
• Tick, tick, tick ... oh, wait, that's the other guy.
• GOAL: Anthony Beauvilliier off a brief two-on-one with Michael Bunting, just a simple redirect off a smooth, ice-level backhand feed. Other assist: Matt Grzelcyk. Time: 3:54, first period. Penguins, 1-0
Pittsburgh goal!
Scored by Anthony Beauvillier with 16:06 remaining in the 1st period.
