Penguins forward prospect Melvin Fernstrom will return to the SHL next season.
Fernstrom, who the Penguins acquired in a trade with Vancouver last season, signed his entry-level contract this spring and is eligible to be in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. But he said the plan for him is to return to Sweden, where he still has an active contract with Orebro HK.
Fernstrom was actually drafted in the OHL yesterday, being selected in the third round by the Peterborough Petes 124th overall. While the OHL is an option for him (and one that fellow European prospects have taken before to get acclimated to North America), Fernstrom will be back in Europe.
Because Fernstrom is 19, his contract will slide and not count toward the 50-contract limit.
