With the Penguins missing the playoffs for a third consecutive season, speculation is bound to run rampant.
One of the classic theories in the last couple of offseasons -- not based in anything real, just speculation -- is that Mike Sullivan would be leaving as head coach. No, not that he would be fired, but that he would step down to go coach elsewhere. It started two summers ago with the idea that Sullivan would be interested in the Rangers' coaching opening, an idea he shut down at the time.
On Friday as the Penguins had their exit meetings and locker room cleanout before leaving for the summer, Sullivan was asked point-blank about his intentions moving forward, and he got ahead of the rumors before they even started this time.
"My intentions are to be the head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins."
