Sullivan: 'So appreciative' for time in Pittsburgh
Mike Sullivan was formally introduced as the 38th head coach in Rangers history on Thursday, meeting with the media in New York for the first time since he was hired last week.
Sullivan was asked what went into the reasons he and the Penguins "parted ways," and he declined to comment on what went into the change.
What Sullivan did say, however, is that he gained a lot from his 10 years in Pittsburgh and thinks that he can bring that experience to New York and be a better coach for it.
"I'm so appreciative for the opportunity that I was given in Pittsburgh," Sullivan began. "It was a real privilege to work with that group of players there, and in that organization we were able to accomplish a lot when we were there. I'm so grateful for that opportunity that I was given there in Pittsburgh."
Sullivan added that he and the Penguins went through their "fair share of disappointments."
"It's hard to win in this league," he said. "I think having the ability to spend a decade with some of the people that I was able to work with there, some of the players that I was able to coach there, I just think you take so much from those types of experiences. I hope to bring those experiences here to New York that can help me be a better coach for this group of players, that can help us be as competitive as we can. We're going to try to push these guys every day to maximize the potential that that exists here, and we'll see where that takes us. That's what I hope to bring in that is the takeaway from the 10 years that I spent in Pittsburgh."
