The Penguins passed on sending Connor Dewar and Phil Tomasino qualifying offers on Monday, but Kyle Dubas said that afternoon that they were still "having conversations with" both players
Though those conversations lasted long enough for Dewar and Tomasino to become unrestricted free agents on Tuesday, they each still signed a one-year, one-way deal to return to the Penguins. Dewar's contract is worth $1.1 million, and Tomasino's is worth $1.75 million
By not giving either player a qualifying offer, it gave the Penguins a little more flexibility in talks, avoiding potential arbitration cases.
Dewar said on the Penguins' locker room cleanout day that his time in Pittsburgh was "great," and he hoped to re-sign.
"Yeah, any job in the NHL is a good job, I think," he said about his desire to return.
Tomasino, too, expressed interest in re-signing.
"I want to be here," Tomasino said on cleanout day. "I've loved my time here, and I want to be a part of this group in the future as well."
