The Penguins used their third-round pick, 86th overall, on left wing Pierce Mbuyi out of the OHL's Owen Sound Attack.
Mbuyi, listed at 5 foot 11 and 163 pounds, had 75 points (32 goals, 43 assists) in 68 games last season in the OHL. Sportsnet describes Mbuyi as "an energetic forechecker who creates turnovers, never quits on a play and is a shooting option working the weak side flank on the power play.”
Mbuyi called it an "honor" to now wear the same jersey as Sidney Crosby after he was picked.
"Sid, in my opinion, is one of the best players ever," Mbuyi said. "I think probably the best. To be in the same organization as a guy like that, I think that's super special."
Mbuyi is committed to Penn State, though that won't be until 2027-28 at the earliest. He'll return to junior, where he was named captain of Owen Sound in March.
“Pierce leads by example – through hard work, character and commitment,” Attack head coach Scott Wray said of the decision in a team release. ‘Today we are proud to name him captain, knowing he’ll guide this team with the same determination he brings every day.”
