IIHF: Pieniniemi scores Finland's first goal of World Juniors
A day after losing 4-0 to Canada in their first game of the World Junior Championship, Finland beat Germany 3-1 in their second game of the tournament on Friday in Ottawa.
Penguins defense prospect Emil Pieniniemi opened the scoring in the win:
Pieniniemi led Finland with six shots on goal in a team-leading 20:13 on Finland's top defense pairing. His goal was his lone point. He had a plus-2 rating and recorded a minor penalty for holding in the second period.
Pieniniemi, 19, was the Penguins' third-round pick in 2023. He spent most of last season in the top Finnish league and recorded two goals and four assists with a minus-2 rating in 38 games. He moved to the OHL with the Kingston Frontenacs this season, and has four goals and 30 assists with a plus-7 rating in 32 games.
Penguins defense prospect Kalle Kangas picked up his first point of the tournament as well, recording the secondary assist on Finland's third goal. Kangas played in 17:27 on the third defense pairing and was a plus-1 with four shots on goal.
Kangas, 19, was the Penguins' seventh-round pick in 2023. He made his debut in the top Finnish league this season with HPK and has five assists and an even plus/minus in 23 games.
