Exclusive: Mario, Burkle bow out, sale of team to Hoffman near
The bid by Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle to buy back the Penguins appears to be buried.
A source told me today that, because Fenway Sports Group, the current owner, and the Chicago-based Hoffman Family of Companies are either close to a sale agreement or already have one in place -- one that's expected no later than October -- the Lemieux/Burkle group has bowed out.
Expected sale price, I'm further told will be $1.5 billion.
Sale price of the Penguins in 2021 from Lemieux/Burkle to FSG: $900 million.
