Marc-Andre Fleury is officially retired from the NHL after the Wild's elimination from the playoffs, but Fleury and Sidney Crosby will be teammates one final time before Fleury hangs up the skates for good.
Fleury revealed at the Wild's locker room cleanout day on Monday that he accepted an invitation to join Canada at the World Championship, set to be held May 9-25 in Stockholm, Sweden and Herning, Denmark. Crosby previously accepted an invitation to play in the tournament on Sunday.
"After we lost that night, I was like, 'Ah, I'm done,'" Fleury said of his decision. "But then a couple days go by, and I was like, 'Yeah, I think that'd be pretty cool.' ... I went home, my kids were crazy, and I was like, 'Jeez, I gotta keep playing.' No, no, they weren't."
This will be Fleury's first-ever World Championship. He's only represented the men's Canadian national team once in the 2010 Olympics, though he didn't play in any games The only time in his career that he actually played for Canada internationally was at the junior level in the 2003 and 2004 World Junior Championship, winning silver both times.
The only goaltender to be named to Canada's initial 15-player roster was 22-year old Dylan Garand, a Rangers prospect and third-year pro who has spent the entirety of his professional career so far in the AHL.
