Filip Hallander is officially back within the Penguins organization.
Hallander, 24, inked a two-year, one-way deal worth the league-minimum $775,000 on Tuesday. The contract being one-way has no bearing on where he is eligible to play, it only dictates that he would be paid the same salary if sent down to the AHL. He would require waives to be sent down, but that's a product of his age and experience and not his contract.
Hallander finished No. 2 in the Swedish Hockey League in scoring in the regular season with 53 points (26 goals, 27 assists) in 51 games. He and the Penguins began talking midseason about his return to North America. The Penguins retained his rights because they qualified him as a restricted free agent in 2023.
Hallander's reasoning for returning to Sweden initially was largely family-based after he had a son when he was 21. Hallander also cited an "unfinished business" mentality in wanting to return to his former (and hometown) team -- when he left Timra the first time, Timra had just been relegated to the second league, but has since returned to the SHL.
