Kyle Dubas on Wednesday pushed back at the notion that they would flip newly-acquired defenseman Luke Schenn at the trade deadline or this summer.
"We feel that having Luke’s defensive play, character, leadership, toughness and spirit is something we need here to help push our program through this phase and preserve our culture and standards as we work to return to contention," Dubas said.
Schenn is helping the Penguins push through this retooling "phase," absolutely: The Penguins on Friday flipped him to the Jets for a 2026 second-round pick and a 2027 fourth-round pick.
The Penguins now have eight picks (or nine, depending on if the Rangers' pick from the Canucks is deferred) in the 2026 draft: One in the first round, three in the second round, two in the third round, and one in each of the sixth and seventh rounds.
The trade leaves the Penguins with six defensemen on the active roster, with Ryan Graves presumably drawing back into the lineup to fill the vacancy left by the Vincent Desharnais trade.
The Penguins now have three contract slots open toward their limit of 50.
