The Penguins traded Michael Bunting and a 2026 fourth-round pick to the Predators for defenseman Luke Schenn and forward Tommy Novak.
Schenn, 35, is a right-handed defenseman listed at 6 foot 2 and 224 pounds, and presumably fills the opening left by Wednesday's earlier trade of Vincent Desharnais on the right side of the blue line. Schenn skated in 61 games for the Predators this season, recording one goal, four assists, 41 penalty minutes and a minus-9 rating. He has one year remaining on a contract that carries a $2.75 million cap hit
Novak, who turns 28 next month, is a left-handed shot listed at 6 foot 1 and 180 pounds. He has 13 goals and nine assists in 52 games with the Predators this season. He's signed for two more years after this season with a $3.5 million cap hit.
Bunting, 29, had one year remaining on his contract that carried a $4.5 million cap hit. He had 14 goals and 15 assists in 58 games, having missed time over the course of the season as a healthy scratch, his car accident outside of the arena, and an appendectomy last month. He was on injured reserve at the time of the trade and didn't count toward the 23-man roster limit as a result.
After this trade and the earlier one that sent Desharnais to the Sharks, the Penguins are at 49 of their allotted 50 contracts. They're right at the 23-man roster limit, though the roster limit disappears after Friday's trade deadline. They have roughly $10.5 million in cap space.
