Sidney Crosby tonight overtook Wayne Gretzky in one record and inched closer to overtaking him in another in the Penguins' 4-2 loss to the Islanders here at PPG Paints Arena.
Crosby scored the Penguins' second in the final minute of the first period.
The play started with Crosby behind the Penguins net, setting up Rickard Rakell in the slot for a Grade-A chance that was stopped by Ilya Sorokin. The rebound popped out to Ryan Graves above the left circle, and Graves passed it to Conor Timmins at the point. Timmins took a shot that hit Simon Holmstrom and bounced over to Crosby, and Crosby took a shot that went under the skate and between the legs of Scott Mayfield, and beat Sorokin glove-side:
It was Crosby's 1,670th career point, surpassing Wayne Gretzky for the fourth-most points with a single franchise in league history.
More importantly, it was Crosby's 74th point of the season. He only needs six more points to surpass Gretzky and clinch what would be his record-setting 20th point-per-game season, and the Penguins have 12 games to go.
