Starting next season, the QMJHL's top rookie will be the recipient of an award bearing Sidney Crosby's name.
The QMJHL on Tuesday announced that it's Rookie of the Year trophy, which previously did not have its own official name, will now be known as the Sidney Crosby Trophy. Crosby won the award himself in 2003-04 with the Rimouski Oceanic, a season in which he recorded 135 points in 59 games.
"When the trophy committee met, Sidney Crosby’s name quickly became the unanimous choice," QMJHL Commissioner Mario Cecchini said in a statement. "He has left such an important mark on the history of the Oceanic and the QMJHL, and you can see how proud he is of his time with us every time he talks about it. What’s more, the timing is perfect with the presentation of the 2025 Memorial Cup in Rimouski.”
The league surprised Crosby with the news in Montreal ahead of the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament:
I asked Crosby at the 4 Nations Face-Off media day on Tuesday about the feeling having an award named after himself.
"It's kind of a new (feeling) for me," Crosby said with a smile. "I had some great years playing in Rimouski in the Q. I was honored that they would do that. That two years was a pretty fun time in my life. I'm just honored."
