Penguins' scouts 'passionate' about finding Beauchesne late
Nearly all public ranking services had right-handed defenseman Quinn Beauchesne projected to go somewhere in the top-100 picks in this year's draft, as high as 48th overall.
The Penguins got him at No. 148 in the fifth round.
Beauchesne, 18, recently completed his second OHL season with the Guelph Storm. After scoring seven points (two goals, five assists) in 33 games in his rookie season, he more than tripled his production this year with 24 points (six goals, 18 assists) in 49 games.
"He makes a really strong pass, defends well, intelligent," vice president of player personnel Wes Clark said of Beauchesne, noting that their scouts Brandon DeFazio and Chris Roque were "really passionate" about finding him in the fifth round.
Beauchesne, who is 6 feet tall and 185 pounds, is described as a "high-end skater and active defender with shutdown potential and quality tools," by Elite Prospects, but added that managing mistakes and turnovers is going to be key for him to continue to find success.
