Ville Koivunen scored four goals and Vasily Ponomarev scored three in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's 9-0 blowout of the Hershey Bears tonight at Mohegan Sun Arena.
Koivunen now leads all AHL rookies in points (34), is tied for the rookie lead in assists (21) and is tied for second with 14 goals in 37 games. All four of these goals were scored at even-strength and came in the first two periods.
Ponomarev scored a power-play goal and an even-strength goal in the first period, then completed the hat trick with an even-strength goal in the third.
Sergei Murashov earned his first AHL shutout with 27 saves. He's now 4-0 at the AHL level this season, with a 1.50 goals-against average and a .950 save percentage.
Sam Poulin scored a goal, Filip Kral had a goal and four assists, Emil Bemstrom four assists. Bemstrom now ranks No. 2 in the entire AHL in scoring with 41 points (19 goals, 22 assists) in 35 games. Atley Calvert was recalled from Wheeling and made his AHL debut, recording an assist.
Per Wilkes-Barre play-by-play broadcaster Nick Hart, nine goals is the largest margin of victory in a win in franchise history.
Hershey, the two-time defending Calder Cup champion, and was ranked No. 2 in the Eastern Conference in points percentage prior to the game, but Wilkes-Barre overtook the Bears, now 23-10-4 for 50 points.
