Councilwoman calls for discussion on Pirates' future
One day after the Pirates announced they were retaining Ben Cherington, Pittsburgh City Councilwoman Theresa Kail Smith announced that she has called for a post agenda before Council to formally discuss the ownership of the Pirates and the future of PNC Park.
Smith made the request to open a public dialogue following years of growing concern from city residents and baseball fans regarding the direction of the team.
"The Pittsburgh Pirates are more than just a baseball team; they are a vital part of our city's identity, history, and economy," she said. “As elected officials, we have a responsibility to listen to our constituents and facilitate a constructive conversation about what's best for the city and its residents."
The post agenda will serve as a mechanism for Council to receive public input, engage with stakeholders, and explore potential solutions concerning the franchise. The team's lease is set to expire in 2030.
