Ben Cherington touched on a few topics this afternoon on his team-produced radio show:
• "It’s April, it’s early. We’re still working through what’s our best mix in the pitching group. Wilber Dotel is a great story. Passed over in the International market. One of the strongest workers in the organization. We needed to make a move because of last night, needed someone who could provide some length. Good chance he’ll pitch today."
• On making moves early in the season: "Short-term, focus on pitchers in the organization and not trades or free agency."
• On the Penguins playoff run and relationship with Kyle Dubas: "Love hockey, love the sport." He did get to know Kyle a bit during his time in Toronto. "Kyle is an open-minded person, willing to take risks."
• On Seth Hernandez: "We don’t want to create a hard ceiling, some guys can move faster. High school pitchers, they don’t pitch a lot of innings. We know we want Seth and others to get into the 130, 150, 170 inning. You can’t go from 35 innings in high school, so we have to create a ladder, so pace will look different. He’s incredibly talented... keep challenging him."
• On Jared Jones: "Bullpen went well. He went back to Florida, pitched extended sim game in Florida. Already up to 100 mph. He’ll have another outing with extended team. If that goes well, then a more formal rehab assignment. He’s a sports car that wants to go fast."
• On Oneil Cruz's work in center field: "Communication has been about encouraging him to be louder. He’s getting dirty more, diving, sliding … "
