The Pirates lost their first game of this six-game West Coast road trip tonight at Angel Stadium. Matt Gorski hit a home run in his first major-league at bat and Oneil Cruz added another. But, the Angels scored four unanswered runs, including three in the fourth inning off Carmen Mlodzinski and secured a 4-3 win.
Updates from the clubhouse:
• Derek Shelton on the team's reaction to Gorski's home run: "They were excited. They gave him the silent treatment. I think they give him a little bit of the cold shoulder, as you would expect, first hit in the big leagues for a homer."
• Gorski said it was like an "out of body experience" when he got into the clubhouse but said it was "pretty cool, I got to the dugout and kind of blacked out a little bit. They did the ol' silent treatment on me, which was funny."
• On Mlodzinski's struggles after the second inning, Shelton said he's consistently seen that pitches get "Up on him. Up and in the middle of the plate. That's an adjustment we have to make."
• I asked Mlodzinski the same question while we were in the clubhouse and he gave a pretty expanded answer: "I’m just not creating the space that I need to create in the zone where guys will have to respect the top of the zone with the hard stuff and then the slider would play better."
• Along with that, I asked him about his first five major-league starts and how he thinks his transition has gone. He said the "Results haven't been perfect so far. But I think the game is giving me information. It’s telling me what do I need to work on, what adjustments do I need to make."
He later added: "The guys on the other team are going to tell you what you need to adjust that second or third time through and that for me is important right now."
