Paul Skenes gave the Pirates a chance to win on Sunday, but the team fell to the Marlins, 4-2, at PNC Park. A big reason for the loss was a lack of run support, leaving 11 men on base and going 1 for 8 with runners in scoring position.
"It was tough," Don Kelly said after the game."[Max] Meyer did a good job on the mound. I thought we chased down at the beginning and made some adjustments off of him. We got some guys on base into scoring position."
There was one play that really tipped those dreadful stats heavily in the Marlins' favor as Jakob Marsee robbed Jake Mangum of an extra-base hit with the bases loaded in the fifth inning. Had the ball landed, the Pirates could have taken at least a 3-2 lead.
Even so, there were still six other opportunities to drive in runs and the Pirates couldn't crack Meyer. Now, Meyer is now slouch on the mound. He improved to 7-0 on the season, lowered his ERA to 2.75 and set the Marlins' club record for the longest undefeated streak to start a season.
"He's just a really good pitcher," Mangum said. "He had a really good feel for all of his pitches. He was locating, spotting it up, so tip of the cap to him."
For as good as Meyer's been and was again on Sunday, the Pirates will face more elite pitching throughout the remainder of the season. They need to figure out a way to maintain run production, with or without injured players such as Oneil Cruz and Konnor Griffin in the lineup.
"We don't like losing," Mangum said. "We're doing all we can to win games. We're in a little bit of a rough patch right now, but there's lot of ball left to be played and we've got a really good clubhouse full of good dudes that work hard and are pulling for each other and believe in each other. We need to do that and we're going to pull the same side of the rope."
