Ryan O'Hearn's two-run homer in the sixth inning of the Pirates' 5-1 win over the Astros tonight here at Daikin Park served two purposes.
First and foremost, it provided some extra insurance in a four-run inning that really ended up making the difference, as the Pirates secured the series win as well as their fifth victory in their last six games. It also stretched the team's home-run streak to 11 games. A Pirates team has homered in 11-plus straight games on only four other occasions in the Modern Era: 11 straight games in 2012, 12 straight games in 2015 and 1996, and 13 straight games in 1994.
A year after finishing dead-last in the category, the Pirates now have the 10th-most home runs in Major League Baseball (74). Brandon Lowe and O'Hearn, their two biggest offseason additions, have played a big part in that with 15 and nine home runs, respectively, on the year. Lowe leads the team while O'Hearn ranks third behind OneilCruz (14).
“As a whole right now, we feel pretty good to get out of here with a series win," O'Hearn said following a two-hit night in which he finished with three RBIs. "I can’t say enough about the offense. These guys have great at-bats every night. A lot of hard-hit outs, and to still find a way to put up five runs, I think we’re in a good spot right now.”
