Hitters getting 'a little too aggressive' at the plate
Just spent some time with MattHague to discuss a few different topics, but I did begin our conversation by asking him what it would take to get out of this recent stretch in which the Pirates have scored just two runs in their last 26 innings.
"We've had these little pockets and one of the common trends that seems to pop up is just chase and getting a little too aggressive," Hague said of a group that has the 10th-highest chase rate (30.8%) in Major League Baseball. "It's that fine line of you don't want to take their aggressiveness away, but it's also about having kind of that controlled aggression. When we bring guys in the middle, we have some of the highest production in all of baseball. So it's kind of the balance of that, without getting them to be passive. Then, out of those three games, the pitchers that we prepared for completely flipped the script. You're respecting that they completely flipped the script, but we also got to continue to push ourselves to adjust. Some good learning moments as we continue to grow, stay disciplined and focused."
