The Pirates today recalled left-handed pitcher Evan Sisk from Class AAA Indianapolis and optioned left-handed pitcher Hunter Barco to Indianapolis.
Sisk will wear No. 48.
Sisk, 28, went 1-0 with a 1.17 ERA, 14 strikeouts and a .200 batting average against (6-for-30) in 7 2/3 innings over six appearances in Indianapolis prior to being recalled. Sisk explained today he's worked to adjust his arm slot to get his command under control, which ha helped him rack up the strikeouts. Now that he's in Pittsburgh, he's ready for any opportunity that comes his way.
"Whenever the phone rings, if it's coming in to face a lefty, one inning or one-plus, whatever they need from me," Sisk said. "I'm excited to get going."
Don Kelly explained Monday the move was for two reasons. First, they needed a fresh arm for the bullpen. Second, they want to stretch Barco out into a starting role.
"He's gonna be a big part of what we're doing moving forward," Kelly said. "We need to get him stretched back out. We believe he's a starting pitcher long term. Does that mean when he comes back up that he'll be in the rotation? Don't know. He can still fill that bulk role. We just need to get him some more touches on the mound and we needed a fresh arm for this series."
