The last time Tyler Callihan made a major-league start before Saturday was just over a year ago on May 5, 2025, in Atlanta's Truist Park as a member of the Reds.
His start -- and his season -- ended when he crashed into the left-field wall and fractured his left forearm, an injury that required three surgeries to repair.
After being acquired in a trade with the Reds in March, Callihan made his first start since his injury at third base in the Pirates' 6-3 loss to the Reds on Saturday.
"It felt amazing," Callihan said with a smile at his locker after. "Obviously, given everything that happened here, a full-circle moment, but I'm just happy to be here."
Callihan had three at-bats in the loss, recording a walk and an RBI double that brought the Pirates one run back of the Braves in the fourth inning:
"He had great at-bats today," Don Kelly said. "Swung the bat well. Had the lineout, then the double, the big walk to start that one inning."
Callihan said he felt like he's seeing pitches better and is getting more time to make decisions, making him feel "very comfortable" at the plate since joining the Pirates.
"I feel great," he said. "I feel like I'm right where I'm supposed to be. Thank you to all the guys here, all the players helping me out throughout the last week while I've been hitting BP. Made some big strides, and I feel good where I'm at."
