• The Pirates suffer a 7-2 loss to the Orioles here at Ed Smith Stadium. Noah Davis allowed three runs and struck out five over 4 2/3 innings. Marcell Ozuna and Joey Bart each collected hits. Nick Cimillo homered in the ninth. Pirates are back home against the Braves tomorrow.
• HOME RUN: It was nice to see while it lasted. Davis with 4 2/3 scoreless innings before allowing a three-run shot to Ward. Nice ovation for Davis as he's pulled. Threw 41 of 64 pitches for strikes. Just left a cutter in the zone and Ward punished him for it.
• Low throw by Triolo on a groundout, but Yorke digs it out of the dirt. Nice work there.
• A fifth inning of work for Davis. Neither offense is doing much of anything today.
• Davis strikes out the side in the third with the breaking ball. Got Taveras with the curve and Wilson and Barrero on the sweeper. Five whiffs in that inning. Impressive afternoon.
• Mangum is a ballplayer, man. Good, quality at-bats, a sense of urgency on the basepaths. Both on display here in the third with a walk and a stolen base.
• An eight-pitch second for Davis. Getting guys to chase pitches, including a screwball.
• An effective first for Davis. Threw six of nine pitches for strikes. Not easy to navigate through Ward, Rutschman and Alonso either.
• A 1-2-3 first for Bradish. Actually got lucky O'Hearn and Reynolds didn't punish breaking balls left over the plate.
• Second trip to Sarasota this spring and another nice ovation for O'Hearn. They love him here.
• Routine groundout to third and Mangum makes it interesting. That hustle down the line makes so much of a difference when a guy is putting pressure on defenders. Almost beat that out.
• First pitch: Pirates vs. Orioles, 1:05 p.m., Kyle Bradish to Jake Mangum, 86 degrees, sunny
• As I mentioned in the feed, Lowe was scratched with lower body tightness. He'll still take part in practice today in Bradenton. His removal from the lineup seems precautionary.
• Brandon Lowe was originally in the lineup, playing second and batting second. He’s been scratched. Waiting on an update.
