Stuff from Ben Cherington's appearance on the team-produced radio show:
• On Bubba Chandler: "It's been a nice steady progression over the last month. The walk rate has come down."
• On the pitching staff: "I still really see a lot of potential in this group and we know that to win as many games as we are able to win this year... we're gonna need a little bit more consistency on the run prevention. Really still believe most of the solution for that is in the Pirates organization."
• On the cause of the pitching performance, he mentioned OPS against is higher with runners on base than nobody on base: "Just a little bit of bad luck." without explaining what kind of bad luck.
• Cherington provided a timeline with the Oneil Cruz injury explaining the injury occurred Saturday in Atlanta sliding at home plate. He sat out the game Sunday. The X-ray in Atlanta was negative with no sign of a fracture. The symptoms were improving into Monday that led Cruz to say he could play Tuesday. When he got into his hitting before the game, he felt it in a more specific spot. That led to the MRI and CT scan. They expect Cruz to be out 4-6 weeks.
• On Konnor Griffin's status with the right forearm strain: "He's throwing. Now he's into that throwing progression and with this particular issue that he's coming off of, we want to make sure, it's a legitimate throwing progression. This is not going to be a two or three day thing. He'll continue to build up volume and distance. And then at some point, assuming that goes well, he'll probably hit a rehab assignment of some kind. We don't have a specific date for that yet. But the fact that he's in a throwing progression means that hopefully that's coming."
• Cherington did say Griffin has no issue hitting and that he has been hitting.
• Cherington doesn't expect Wilber Dotel to be out long as they caught the right lat strain early: "It's in a specific location. We believe on the information we have, it's on the minor side. He's gonna recover quickly."
• On the team's poor results using the Automated Ball-Strike System (ABS), Cherington said, "The bottom line is that we haven't done real well with it yet. That's just a fact. And so that means to me that we haven't done a good enough job figuring out as a team because this is a tool we should be taking advantage."
