The Pirates defeated the Twins, 10-9, on Saturday afternoon at PNC Park, a back-and-forth struggle that had moments of frustration.
While the team was already frustrated seeing a 7-1 lead slip away in the fourth inning, it was further punctuated by a denied ABS challenge by Brandon Lowe that appeared to lead to his eventual ejection as first base umpire Jordan Baker thought Lowe was still arguing about the challenge.
"Kind of a sad first ejection, I guess, if we're looking at ejections as a whole. But yeah, I was just frustrated with myself, and let out my frustration to myself, and got thrown out for it," Lowe said. "I didn't even realize that I was thrown out until I was about three-quarters of the way back to the dugout, and saw (Jonny Tucker) kind of pointing towards first base."
After the game, it appeared Don Kelly was trying to hold back his reaction when asked about the ejection but he defended his player.
"That was a total miscommunication," Kelly said. "Jordan did not understand what he was saying and totally overreacted, I thought. Lowe was upset that … he thought he had swung at ball four. Jordan thought he was yelling at the home-plate umpire. It was a total misunderstanding."
