Shelton chooses to not reflect negatively on tenure here
As DerekShelton prepares to manage against his former team for the first time, he's presented with an opportunity to reflect on his five-plus seasons in the Pirates' uniform.
There was certainly more to be desired from his 306-440 record, the five losing seasons and the three last-place finishes in the National League Central division. Yet Shelton insisted he won't let that affect the way in which he views the time he spent in Pittsburgh.
"I wish it would have went differently, obviously," Shelton said in the Twins' dugout this afternoon at PNC Park. "I think there were a lot of factors that come into play there. Some of them are out of my control. To look back on it, I'll never look back on it in a negative connotation, regardless of how anything went down, how it went. Do I wish we would have had better teams here? Yeah. Was some of that out of my control? Yeah. But looking back at it negatively? I'll never do that."
And regarding the Pirates bringing in more offensive talent this past offseason, notably BrandonLowe and RyanO'Hearn?
"You can go back and say if this would happened and if this would have happened, but everything happens for a reason," Shelton said. "I'm where I should be."
