Colin Holderman has avoided arbitration by agreeing to a $1.5 million deal, per source.
Holderman, 29, is coming off a season in which he went 3-6 with a 3.16 ERA, a 1.31 WHIP and 56 strikeouts over 51 1/3 innings in 55 appearances. When Holderman was good, he was really good, as he compiled a 3-1 record with a 1.77 ERA and .205 batting average against in 37 appearances prior to the All-Star break. He had his share of struggles in the second half, though, going 0-5 with a 6.32 ERA, a 1.47 WHIP and .268 batting average against over the course of 18 appearances.
Pirates desperately need the back end of their bullpen to be steady, especially with the departure of AroldisChapman. Holderman will certainly need to avoid those prolonged rough stretches in order for that to happen moving forward.
