Jared Jones buckles over in pain after being struck by a line drive Sunday in Denver.
Jared Jones exited today's game against the Rockies here at Coors Field after being hit in the right elbow with an 88 mph line drive off the bat of TJRumfield in the third inning:
Jared Jones takes a line drive off the back of his right elbow and is clearly frustrated right away...
Initial images of the right elbow of Jones, who is recently back from reconstructive elbow surgery, read as negative. He will be reexamined by the team medical staff tomorrow in Pittsburgh.
Jones immediately strode off the field, screaming in apparent pain, and straight down the dugout steps. He threw 45 pitches and allowed one run on a hit and two walks with three strikeouts over three innings before being replaced by YohanRamirez.
"It doesn't feel great, but kinda best-case scenario that nothing is too messed up in there," said Jones, who was making his fifth start since being activated from the 60-day injured list. "Feel like (I was) a little overdramatic, but getting hit in the elbow five starts coming off surgery kinda pisses me off. But, yeah, everything was fine."
Jones said he was able to breathe a sigh of relief after getting the imaging results back. He was told that if it was any lower and hit the bone, it probably would have shattered.
"Thankfully, I'm so tall that it got me in the good part," Jones joked.
Jones missed all of last season and the first two months of this season after undergoing an internal brace procedure last May. Through his five starts, Jones has been limited to 74-77 pitches and CarmenMlodzinski has been used to piggyback him in starts. He hadn't pitched more than five innings in a start and had a 5.75 ERA with a 1.52 WHIP this season.
Mlodzinski was unavailable to follow Jones in this particular start after throwing 32 pitches over two scoreless innings on Saturday.
