Making his first major-league start since Sept. 27, 2023 in Philadelphia, Johan Oviedo struck out the side, but lasted just one inning against the Giants this evening at PNC Park.
Oviedo gave up two runs on three walks and two singles, as he struggled with his fastball and slider command, throwing 43 pitches and only 23 for strikes. Of the 18 fastballs, the Giants whiffed on both swings and looked at five strikes. A total of 11 missed the zone.
"Ovi is an intense person and got a little amped up there in the first," DonKelly said. "He started flying open and command wasn't there, but really good to see him back on the mound healthy. Stuff up to 96, throwing the ball well and I think he just got a little over-amped and it was spraying on him a little bit."
Oviedo has experienced a long journey back after missing the entire 2024 season due to Tommy John surgery and being forced to rehab again this season after a right lat strain in spring training.
"Definitely happy to be back," Oviedo said. "I still have a lot of work to do. I was trying to execute pitches a little too perfect."
