Maikol Escotto, a 22-year-old shortstop prospect, has been promoted to Class AA Altoona. In a corresponding move, left-handed pitcher Blake Townsend has been transferred to Class A Greensboro.
Escotto slashed .319/.370/.525 with an .895 OPS, six home runs and 20 RBIs in 38 games with Greensboro. At the time of his promotion, he ranked third in the South Atlantic League in batting average, fourth in slugging percentage and seventh in OPS.
It's been a breakout year for Escotto, who has experienced struggles at the plate over the last three years, most of which have been spent in Greensboro. He hit .202 in 69 games between three levels in 2022 before batting .213 in 89 games with Greensboro in 2023 and hitting .215 in 68 games with the team last season.
Escotto was one of four players acquired by the Pirates in the January 2021 trade that sent Jameson Taillon to the Yankees.
