Brandan Bidois didn't have a special performance on the mound for his MLB debut tonight as the Pirates lost 10-4 to the Rockies at PNC Park but for the Australian born pitcher, the importance of the day wasn't lost.
"It was super special. Throughout the game, had a lot of phone calls to the bullpen and every time your heart just kind of drops and sinks out of your stomach," Bidois said. "I was just concerned about throwing strikes, filling up the zone, giving us a chance, and I think I did a pretty good job of that."
The nerves might have gotten to Bidois to start the eighth inning as he entered the game with the Pirates down 6-4 and was welcomed to the big leagues by a Mickey Moniak double to right field on an 0-1 slider.
"Yeah, 100%. That first one is never easy," Bidois said. "Your heart's racing. Everything's going a million miles an hour, but just being able to slow the game down, I think that's going to be the key for the next one."
While Bidois didn't get the zero on the run column, allowing a TJ Rumfield home run in his debut, seeing his mother after having to make a trip around the world was something special for him.
"But now that that's all out of the way, that was my first time seeing her in probably, I don't know, over two years," Bidois said. "It was a pretty special moment to be able to be on the field with her before coming in."
