When describing the Pirates' offensive approach in a season-high 20-hit output that resulted in a 13-3 win over the Giants here tonight at Oracle Park, SpencerHorwitz had one word come to mind: Relentless.
Seems pretty appropriate considering all nine starters worked to grind through at-bats against San Francisco starter LandenRoupp, forcing him to last just four innings before striking for 12 runs off the bullpen. Every starter registered a hit, and five had multiple hits, notably JoeyBart and NickGonzales finishing with four apiece. Oneil Cruz had three hits, Brandon Lowe and Ryan O'Hearn two apiece.
“It’s great when you have so much depth, one through nine, that can do damage, take your walks and can come through in those RBI situations," said Horwitz, who went 1 for 3 with two walks and an RBI.
For Bart, tonight's win was just another example of the resilience this team has shown this. That particularly relates to the offense, which has been better, but has also gone through tough stretches.
"Yesterday was a tough one," he said. "But we bounced back and put some runs on the board."
