After operating relatively injury-free over a large portion of the first two months of the season, the Pirates are suddenly dealing with a banged up left side of the infield.
KonnorGriffin (forearm soreness) was held out of the Pirates' 7-2 loss to the Cubs here tonight at PNC Park and NickGonzales (left knee discomfort) exited early. Gonzales, whose injury stems from a foul ball he hit off his knee Wednesday, played the first three innings at third base tonight before being replaced by TylerCallihan to begin the fourth.
Both Griffin and Gonzales are being considered day-to-day, but their absence from the lineup in this particular loss was felt, as the Pirates collected just six hits and scored just two runs on a BryanReynolds homer and a Callihan double in the sixth inning.
"Konnor, dealing with the right forearm, was available to pinch run off the bench tonight," DonKelly explained afterwards. "And with Nick, he's tough, man. Coming in, went out for ground balls, and it stiffened up on him. For him to be able to play a couple innings until Callihan got here — tough spot for Callihan, came up with a big at-bat there and a huge double — but for Nick to grind that out, he was not in a good spot."
The Pirates are already without RyanO'Hearn (right quad) and JoeyBart (left foot infection).
Todd Tomczyk, the Pirates' director of sports medicine, is scheduled to meet with the media Friday afternoon.
