The Pirates are promoting AntwoneKelly, their No. 7-ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline, from Class AAA Indianapolis ahead of their weekend series against the Marlins, per source.
There's no word yet on a corresponding move, but Kelly is already on the 40-man roster, so only one move will have to be made in order to add him to the active roster.
Kelly, 22, could provide a boost to a bullpen that has struggled mightily throughout the season. He's served primarily as a starter throughout his career in the minors, but he's pitched multiple innings of relief over his last two appearances with Indy and has posted a 4.50 ERA, a 1.48 WHIP and .268 batting average against over his 13 appearances (10 starts) this season.
Kelly struggled out of the gate in April with a 1-3 record and a 5.91 ERA over his first five appearances (four starts). He's since leveled things out, though, sporting a 3.60 ERA in five May starts and then pitching five scoreless innings over two relief appearances to begin the month of June.
"He's been doing well in the short outings," DonKelly said of Antwone Kelly prior to Tuesday's game. "We're excited about his development and progress."
