Don Kelly just said Johan Oviedo will start tomorrow afternoon’s series finale against the Blue Jays. He is not yet active and a corresponding move will come prior to tomorrow’s game.
A player must be going on the injured list to clear the way for Oviedo's addition, as that's the only exception to the 15-day minimum window in which he must remain in the minors before being recalled. He was optioned to Class AAA Indianapolis on Aug. 5 and tomorrow is the final day of that 15-day window.
Oviedo threw 43 pitches over one inning against the Giants on Aug. 4, his first start in nearly two years after missing the entire 2024 season due to Tommy John surgery and missing most of this year due to a lat strain.
"It was shaky, but I think going through what he went through with the Tommy John, the lat, the fight that it takes and the journey to get back, he was so amped up," Kelly said. "What happened was not planned, from him and then from us, we were just in a spot where we had to make a move and we had to get a fresh pitcher up. Ovi was the guy that went down, but I'm really proud of him. He went down, handled what he needed to do with the competitiveness that he consistently shows, and just really proud of the way he handled that, because it's not easy to do. Going through that whole journey to get back here and then have to pitch one inning, doesn't go the way you planned and then you find yourself back at Triple-A. He was a pro about it, went down and did what he needed to do, and looking forward to him starting tomorrow."
