It seems as if it's either sweep, or be swept for the Pirates.
Over the last month, they've been involved in just two series that didn't involve a sweep. They lost two of three against the Brewers from June 23-25 and suffered the same result at the hands of the Twins from July 11-13. Over this same one-month span, they've swept the Mets, Cardinals and Tigers, and have been swept by the Mariners, Royals and White Sox.
Don Kelly believes the "competitiveness" the team showed during this most recent series sweep of the Tigers is what ultimately allowed them to respond like they did after being swept by the American League's worst team.
"Bailey (Falter) showed it today, the offense showed it. Paul (Skenes) and Mitch (Keller) set the tone, the bullpen was really, really good," Kelly said. "The competitiveness in the at-bats. I mean, (Jack) Flaherty and (Casey) Mize are really good. The young kid today, he's really good, too. His stuff is electric. To have the at-bats that we had consistently throughout the series, being able to stack them on top of each other and stay within our approach, that's the challenge for us going forward."
