Caught up with DavisWendzel ahead of his first start with the Pirates and first in the majors since 2024. Wendzel, a 29-year-old infielder/outfielder who hit .246 with nine home runs and 34 RBIs in 54 games with Class AAA Indianapolis, said he's eager to help the team in any way that he can, whether it be in the infield or outfield.
"I want to prove I belong here," he told me. "I know I do. I truly believe it's great to earn this opportunity, not being on the 40-man, just playing and being consistent down in the minor leagues just proved that I can. I belong and I can be consistent here, too."
Wendzel will have a lot to prove considering he's only hit .128 with a .397 OPS in 27 career major-league games with the Rangers. He spent last season in the Reds organization, hitting a combined .248 with 13 homers and 53 RBIs over 98 games between Class AAA Louisville (94 games) and high Class A Dayton (four rehab games).
