Diamondbacks 5, Pirates 0: That's a ninth shutout already
The Pirates were shut out for the ninth time, most in Major League Baseball, as they went 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position and stranded eight runners in losing to the Diamondbacks, 5-0, tonight at Chase Field.
Arizona starter Ryne Nelson didn't face trouble outside of a game-opening double from Oneil Cruz in lasting 6 2/3 innings and allowing four hits. The Pirates loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth inning, but Justin Martinez entered and set down their 3-4-5 hitters -- Bryan Reynolds, Spencer Horwitz and Joey Bart -- in order. As a collective, they're now hitting .167 with bases loaded and have two extra base-hits in 43 plate appearances.
"Nelson did a nice job," Don Kelly said. "He's short-armed, quick to the plate. The fastball was jumping out of his hand, especially when he had guys on base. He was side-stepping a lot, which made it tough for the hitters, too, because he was quick to the plate."
Andrew Heaney worked five innings, allowed five runs on eight hits, including two home runs, and three walks while striking out two. Braxton Ashcraft made his major-league debut in relief and threw three scoreless innings.
