Extra Bases: McCutchen ties Clemente on home run list
Andrew McCutchen squared up a curveball from Randy Vásquez in the fourth inning of the Pirates' 6-4 loss to the Padres today at Petco Park and hit his 240th home run as a Pirate, tying Roberto Clemente on the franchise's all-time list.
Take a look:
The ball traveled 365 feet into the left field seats with an exit velocity of 104.7 mph for McCutchen's fifth homer of the season and his second in two games.
"It’s crazy to be in that position," McCuthchen said. "To be doing it the first nine years, then be gone for five and still come back and have an opportunity to do it. It’s unique in a sense."
Through his first nine years with the Pirates, McCutchen hit 203 home runs and has added 37 over the last three years. As his career carries on, accomplishments like these happen. He recently surpassed Arky Vaughan for ninth place on the the Pirates' all-time hits list and is among the top three active Major League Baseball players in total bases, trailing Paul Goldschmidt and Freddie Freeman. McCutchen said he never envisioned chasing Clemente's numbers, but those milestones became attainable as he kept playing.
"When you’re having a decent career and the numbers start stacking up, then these numbers start popping up," McCutchen said. "It’s not ever something that I really thought about while going through it."
• Andrew Heaney recovered from Manny Machado's first-inning home run to throw 5 2/3 innings of five-hit ball while striking out three and allowing two earned runs.
The southpaw, who saw his ERA drop to 3.39, retired 13 straight hitters at one point before running into trouble in the sixth. He gave up doubles to Luis Arraez and JacksonMerrill as the Padres cut the Pirates' lead to 4-2 before Don Kelly went to the bullpen.
"I was just trying to be more aggressive in the strike zone," Heaney said. "The last time I faced them, a couple of starts ago, I felt like I put them on, gave them free passes, was just kind of nibbling a little bit. So, I was just trying to be more aggressive."
Heaney said he hasn't been aggressive over his last four starts compared to four straight starts in April when he worked six innings or more. He emphasized pitching to contact with a fastball usage of 59% and a zone percentage of 57%.
"I think it's just kinda getting back to what's made me successful," Heaney said. "When I'm not giving free passes, I'm going to give up lots of contact. So, the less traffic there is the better results you're going to get."
• Braxton Ashcraft followed up his major-league debut from earlier this week and pitched a scoreless eighth inning, striking out two and throwing 15 pitches. Endy Rodriguez returned to the lineup after being placed on the IL on April 15 with a right-finger laceration and went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts.
