The Pirates got themselves a hometown kid in the 13th round when they drafted Liberty University right-handed pitcher Dylan Mathiesen at No. 383.
Mathiesen attended Montour High School in Robinson Township, Pa. He started 17 games for Liberty in 2025 and worked 65 2/3 innings, producing a 5.07 ERA. He struck out 84 and walked 31. The Pirates were interested in Mathiesen, but then he got hurt and had to undergo elbow surgery.
"Knowing that he was a local kid and would have potential interest in being a Pirate, that was something we were able to latch onto and work through as we went through the draft," Justin Horowitz said. "We selected the player because we're super excited about his talent and his character, but it's also pretty cool that he's fairly local and wanted to be a Pirate."
Mathiesen worked mainly as a reliever in 2024, making 14 appearances and two starts. In 2023, he made nine starts for California University of Pennsylvania and posted a 3.31 ERA over 54 1/3 innings.
